According to the latest statistics, about 1.3 million people die of road accidents each year. People who suffer injuries and become disabled as a result of road accidents are more than 30 million. People between the age of 18 and 44 are the ones who are most affected by road accidents. The main causes of road accidents are; drunk driving, poor visibility, rain, over speeding, destroying of road signs, potholes, tire bursts, reckless driving, drowsy driving and driving under the influence of drugs. Although today, drivers who break the traffic rules are fined heavily, road accidents have not yet reduced significantly. In many countries the number of special roads for instance roads used by school children, have been increased but the number of road accidents is still high. The following will reduce road accidents significantly.
A driver should not drink and drive. Driving, while one is drunk, is known as driving under alcohol influence. Alcohol slows down thinking and a driver becomes slow in responding to emergencies. A drunk driver is also not able to calculate distances appropriately. Alcohol is a depressant and it causes more than 30% of all road accidents.
A driver should adjust the side and the rear view mirrors. In order to maximize vision of the driver, the rearview mirror, and the side mirrors are supposed to be well positioned. The side mirrors should be adjusted such that the driver can only see the rear door handles. The driver should also correct the blind spot. The blind spot is a point where the driver cannot see an overtaking vehicle. So before switching lanes, the driver is supposed to look at the rear view mirror, side mirrors and look over his/her shoulder in order to determine if there is a car in the blind spot.
Another driving safety tip is always having on your safety belt. Safety belts attach the driver and the passengers to their seats such that there is no ejection during collisions. Wearing a seat belt will control the number of road deaths and injuries.
Avoiding distractions is another driving safety tip. Some of the driving distractions which should be avoided are; eating, drinking, chatting and talking over the mobile phone. When a driver takes his/her eyes from the road, a fatal accident can happen. The driver should never take the eyes from the road.
Drivers should ensure that the tires are in good condition. Many road accidents happen as a result of the bursting of the tires. The pressure in the tires should also be adequate.
Finally, drivers should maintain safe distances between the vehicles in front and themselves. A safe distance will ensure that the driver stops his/her vehicle safely in case the vehicle ahead is stopped immediately.
